Hatshepsut was a powerful female pharaoh who ruled ancient Egypt during the 18th Dynasty. After the death of his husband Thutmose II, she initially served as regent alongside her nephew and stepson Thutmose III, as he was too young to rule. However, Hatshepsut soon claimed the title of pharaoh for herself, adopting male regalia and portraying herself with a false beard in official artwork.
As pharaoh, Hatshepsut focused on expanding trade and undertaking ambitious building projects, including the magnificent temple at Deir el-Bahri. Her reign was a time of peace and prosperity for Egypt.
After Hatshepsut's death, Thutmose III, sought to erase her legacy by defacing her monuments and inscriptions. Hatshepsut's reign as a female pharaoh was rediscovered by archaeologists in the 19th century, restoring her place as one of the most remarkable rulers in ancient Egyptian history.
