The Eye of Horus has its origins in an ancient Egyptian mythological story about Horus, the falcon-headed god of the sky. According to myth, Set gouged out Horus' eye, which was then magically restored with the aid of Thoth, the god of wisdom, and the new eye became a powerful symbol of protection, healing, and wholeness. For this reason, the Eye of Horus was frequently carved onto walls of temples and tombs, painted on sarcophagi and coffins, and fashioned into amulets worn by the living and the dead. While originating from a myth of violence and sacrifice, the Eye of Horus took on powerful associations with safety, healing, and wholeness in ancient Egyptian culture.
