Akhenaten and Nefertiti were instrumental in promoting the worship of Aten, the sun disk, as the supreme deity in ancient Egypt. Akhenaten, originally known as Amenhotep IV, changed his name to reflect his devotion to Aten.

Nefertiti held an unusually prominent position, often depicted alongside her husband in offering scenes and even shown smiting enemies, a role traditionally reserved for the pharaoh. The royal couple was seen as part of a divine triad with Aten, serving as the god's earthly representatives. Aten was depicted as a sun disk with rays ending in hands reaching out to the king and queen, demonstrating their direct connection to the deity.
