This beautiful statue depicts the noble and priest Paakhref. In addition to revering the goddess Hathor, Paakhref was also responsible for overseeing cargo boats and trade during the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty.
The Egyptian block statues first emerged in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, and were commonly used in temples as funerary monuments for important individuals. The simple shape of the statues provided flat surfaces for inscriptions of offerings and invocations. Egyptian block statues provide insight into the individuals they represent and the religious and funerary practices of ancient Egypt, as they were originally intended to be situated in tombs. Later, the statues could become a temple statue.
