Metternich Stela PapyrusRegular price $67.00
The Metternich Stela is believed to have been commissioned by a priest named Esatum during the Thirtieth Dynasty to be a part of the public part of a temple. The stela is a remarkable example of how magic and medicine were intertwined in Ancient Egypt. In addition to recording spells intended to protect against poison, the hieroglyphic inscriptions detail the story of how Horus fell ill as a child and his subsequent recovery upon the intercession of his mother, Isis. The story would also serve as a mythic precedent, as it was believed that the ill could recite the spells on the Stela or drink from water poured over its inscriptions for a cure.
