This beautiful statue depicts the official Khai-hapi kneeling behind a Sistrum. The original statue was carved during the 19th Dynasty and was likely situated outside of a temple dedicated to Hathor.
The Egyptian block statues first emerged in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, and were commonly used in temples as funerary monuments for important individuals. The simple shape of the statues provided flat surfaces for inscriptions of offerings and invocations. Egyptian block statues provide insight into the individuals they represent and the religious and funerary practices of ancient Egypt, as they were originally intended to be situated in tombs. Later, the statues could become a temple statue.
