This beautiful statue depicts the priest Djedhor. The statue is recognized for the magic texts that cover almost all the available surfaces, meant to protect against dangerous animals and affliction, in addition to a depiction of Horus the Child stepping on a pair of crocodiles. Users would pour water over the statue, which was believed to absorb the magical healing powers of the hieroglyphs covering the statue. This water was then collected in a depression located on the base directly in front of the statue, and it was thought to have healing properties.
The Egyptian block statues first emerged in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, and were commonly used in temples as funerary monuments for important individuals. The simple shape of the statues provided flat surfaces for inscriptions of offerings and invocations. Egyptian block statues provide insight into the individuals they represent and the religious and funerary practices of ancient Egypt, as they were originally intended to be situated in tombs. Later, the statues could become a temple statue.
