The Apis bull was a sacred bull worshiped in ancient Egypt, particularly in the Memphis region. Believed to be the son of the goddess Hathor, the Apis bull was recognized by its distinctive markings.

The cult of the Apis bull was an important part of ancient Egyptian religion and was associated with the worship of Ptah, Osiris, and later Serapis. The bull was considered a symbol of strength, vital energy, and power and was revered as a living god. The Festival of the Apis Bull was celebrated for seven days in Memphis, where the sacred bull was led through the welcoming crowd.

When the Apis bull died, it was mummified and buried with full honours in the Serapeum, an extensive underground cavern at Saqqara.
